Meeting Recap

Invocation and Pledge

Andreya Kopy gave the invocation and led the pledge

Speaker

Our speaker was Supervisory Special Agent Jeff Dressler of the FBI who heads up the health care fraud squad.

The big takeaway was to double check you explanation of benefits (EOB) when you receive them and make sure they match up with the care you received, as billing for services not rendered, or upcoding, which is charging for a more expensive procedure, are common means of fraud.

Health care fraud affects everyone's cost of insurance, as well as medicare/medicaid taxes, so it is a crime that affects us all, even if we don't immediately see it.

Nationally $3.44 billion was returned to the federal government or paid to victims.  Health care fraud squads typically recover $5 for every $1 they spend, and the Cleveland squad managed a $16.69 recovery rate for every $1 spent.
