Meeting Recap

Invocation and Pledge

Barry Kuzmickas gave the invocation and led the pledge

Students

Emily Roueiheb and Sophia Alfred from Mustang Talks visited.  Mustang Talks is the official school podcast, and principal Bill Wingler is the adviser.  They started the podcast to provide a platform for students to share their ideas and insights with fellow students.

Speaker

Our speaker was Fran Stewart talking about the Ohio Freedom Path.  September is recognized as International Underground Railroad month.  The Underground Railroad is a metaphorical name, having neither actual rails, or being under the ground.

Ohio played a major role in the underground railroad because of its geography and proximity to Kentucky and Virginia to the south, and Canada to the north, and the waterways and canals that facilitated transportation.

Providing assistance to freedom seekers was breaking federal law, and Ohio had more safe havens than any other state, with many people moving to Ohio specifically to help the effort.

Ohio Freedom Path have created an app available for your smart phone that provides ideas for places to visit and explore in Ohio with context and history of Ohio's abolitionist past.
