Speaker

Bob Gillingham spoke about his nonprofit work teaching students and families the basics of investing. He said he works with about 26 schools, teaches roughly 6,000 students a year, and does not charge fees or sell products.

His main message was that young people can build substantial wealth by starting early, using compound interest, and investing consistently. He emphasized the Rule of 72, explaining how it estimates the time needed for money to double.

Key points from his presentation:

  1. Start early. Time is the biggest advantage for students and young adults.
  2. Use broad diversification. He cautioned against putting too much money into one stock or one sector.
  3. Favor low-cost funds. He mentioned Schwab, Fidelity, and Vanguard as examples of firms offering low-cost options.
  4. Understand the S&P 500. He described it as a strong foundation because it holds large companies and replaces weaker companies over time.
  5. Avoid hype. He warned students about penny stocks, crypto speculation, and chasing “hot” ideas from social media.
  6. Buy and hold. He said market downturns are normal and that investors should avoid panic selling.
  7. Technology matters. He discussed artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, and computer memory as areas he believes will shape the future.
  8. Education comes first. He said he is not trying to replace financial advisors, but to help people understand investing well enough to make informed decisions.

Bob also offered to teach private sessions for members’ children, grandchildren, or families at no cost. One member shared that Bob had spoken with his grandson, who later opened an investment account and remembered Bob’s advice to stay patient during market drops.
