Friday’s speaker was Ryan Kilbane, Strongsville High School’s new head boys basketball coach and a 1995 SHS graduate. Coach Kilbane shared his journey from Strongsville student-athlete to JV coach, seven seasons at Brunswick under Joe Mackey, and ultimately returning home to lead the Mustangs program. He also serves as the district’s Human Resources Coordinator.

Kilbane spoke about the pride he takes in coaching at his hometown school and the importance of building a program from third grade through 12th. His vision centers on alignment across youth travel teams, middle school, and the high school program so players grow up learning the same expectations and style of play. He highlighted efforts already underway—clinics with travel coaches, a fall league with over 200 participants, and welcoming middle school athletes into high-school pregame activities—to keep young players engaged and connected.

He emphasized his program’s three core values: effort, enthusiasm, and execution, along with teaching competitiveness as a life skill that extends well beyond basketball. While this year’s varsity team is young—returning only one starter after graduating nearly all of last year’s scoring—he noted the players’ strong work ethic, steady improvement, and their commitment to doing things the right way on and off the court.

Kilbane also shared the meaningful relationships that make coaching special, including a story about a player proudly showing him his new driver’s license—a reminder of the impact coaches can have on their athletes’ lives.

In the Q&A, he addressed topics ranging from parochial school recruiting pressures, the growing impact of NIL in high school athletics, the evolving three-point-centered style of play, and the importance of building four strong contributors in each grade level to sustain a successful public-school program.

Coach Kilbane invited members to support the Mustangs at their next home game against Medina, noting that community involvement is a key part of what makes playing for Strongsville so special.
